GETTING YOUR BODY, MIND, AND ENERGY RIGHT FOR CEREMONY

• Why Ceremony Prep? •

An overarching intention with facilitating this ceremony is to help you change and expand your life in some shape, manner, or form. One’s diet prior to ceremony is an important facet of the entire ceremonial experience. The word “diet" actually comes from the Greek word “diaita,” which means “way of life.” What we are asking of you prior to ceremony is to change your way of life; from the food that you consume to the activities that you participate in, the people that you surround yourself with, and the media that you absorb.

Ceremony begins before ceremony begins, and it starts with choosing to treat yourself, your body, your mind, your heart, and your spirit in a more loving, nurturing, nourishing way. Please follow the dietary guidelines listed here below. While you are encouraged to follow them for as long as a month before entering ceremony, it is only required that you adhere to them for 14 days prior (or 72 hours for a few specific things listed below). These guidelines are in place for your safety and wellbeing, the comfort of your body and mind, and the ease of the sacraments to work through you deeply and effortlessly.

If you are absolutely unwilling to follow the dietary guidelines leading into ceremony, then this experience is not for you at this time. We understand that it can be difficult, foreign, and thus stressful to change your daily habits - and that is one of the reasons that we hold this gathering. If you are going to refuse to fully step into this preparation, then we kindly ask that you do not plan to attend this gathering.

How we prep for ceremony can determine how much we are able to take away from the immersion. The more that we put into setting ourselves up for a successful, profound, life-changing experience, the more enrichment we will receive from it. Trust the process, lean into your discomforts, and do something different. You will not regret it.

• Diaita: A Way of Life •

The Greek word for diet is diaita, which actually translates as "a way of life." Please remember that the less tangible parts of the ceremony diet are just as important as the food requirements. Who you choose to share energies with, where you choose to spend time, the content that you choose to consume via social media, television, the radio, etc., are all aspects of the diet. What vibration does your "way of life" carry?

Challenge yourself with this. Pre-ceremony dieting can be incredibly life-changing by itself and if we really think about it, it is a decision to act in healthier ways in several different aspects of your life. There is only benefit to choosing into healthy practices.

In saying that, if any of the dietary requirements below conflict with any specific health needs of yours, please discuss those with us in order to discern if they can be accommodated.

• Come Prepared •

At the bottom of this page, you will find our recommended packing list to help you be prepared as possible for anything that you may need during your time with us. Please know that while Deva Haven is equipped with lots of essentials and generosity, we are not responsible for providing anything that is advised on the packing list.

Note that you will likely feel overprepared when packing - this is largely in part because Utah's weather and climate can be delightfully unpredictable, and we can sometimes experience rain, sunshine, cold winds, and hot temperatures all in one day. It is best to be overprepared than not prepared enough.

YOUR CEREMONY DIET QUESTIONS, ANSWERED:

Follow these dietary guidelines the 14 days leading into the ceremony. This diet is for your safety and benefit, and to maintain integrity and depth in the work that we will be. Please don't hesitate to reach out to us if any of these guidelines contradict specific dietary needs of yours.

  • No processed foods preferred
  • No tyramine-containing foods (aged & fermented foods such as cheddar, swiss, parmesan, sauerkraut, & kimchi, cured meats, smoked & processed meats, alcohol, soy sauce, teriyaki sauce, fish sauce, shrimp sauce, miso, raisins, prunes, sourdough bread, peanuts, pickled or dried fish/shrimp, overripe fruits). Consuming tyramine-containing foods while taking an MAOI such as Ayahuasca can lead to a hypertensive crisis, because MAOIs block the enzyme that breaks tyramine down in the body. Ain't nobody got time for crises, so please do not consume these.

Consuming tryptophan-containing foods while taking an MAOI such as Ayahuasca can lead to serotonin syndrome, because tryptophan is the precursor to serotonin production in the brain, and the MAOI in Ayahuasca prevents the breakdown of serotonin. Ain't nobody got time for crises, so please do not consume these.
